I feel honored.

It would seem that I've won the UK lottery about 35 times in the past couple of months. Not sure how I'm eligible for it, but it's always nice to know I'm a winner. Don't know how much, but if it's as many times as they say, it's gotta be a lot.

I think I'm gonna buy one of those Ferarri's where they custom-build the seat to fit you. Maybe a private jet, too. Yeah, that's the ticket.

Weather update

It rained in Idaho this Monday (today, yesterday...the line is all fuzzy). 'Where?' you ask, inquiringly. Pretty much everywhere. Just about the whole state was wet. I know this, see, because I drove through most of it. It was pretty much wet all around.

Nevada, by way of contrast, is rather significantly not wet.

There's also this thing I used to do, where I wouldn't drive all night coming back from Idaho.

Yeah, I don't do that anymore, apparently.

One last newsflash: the Basques make good cheese. Very, very good cheese.

The Guard Duck Strikes Again

So, apparently I've been 'tagged' by BeatriceG. This observation has nothing to do with the title above. In fact, the title has nothing to do with anything else, except for being a reference to the comic strip 'Pearls Before Swine.'

1. What time is it? 10:31 AM.

2. What are you most afraid of? Being forced to watch Snakes on a Plane again. Worst. Movie. Ever. Also, sharks. And heights. Nothing else.

3. Have you ever seen a ghost? No.

4. Where were you born? 1315 Rocking W Ln., in Bishop, California.

5. Ever been to Alaska? I wish. Alaksa is cool.

6. Ever been toilet papering? Yes, but I can't tell anyone, or else I'll blow my cover.

7. Croutons or Bacon bits? Cherry tomatoes. (I considered the question to pose a false dichotomy, so I went with another, third option, which was not presented.)

8. Favorite day of the week? Saturday and Sunday.

9. Favorite restaurant? Best one I've ever been to is Old Europe, in Georgetown, D.C. Their veal was amazing. So tender.

10. Favorite Flower? A very manly flower. Are there any flowers that are actually predatory, like the Venus Flytrap? Carnivorous flowers, that's the ticket!

11. Favorite sport to watch? Baseball. Also, more baseball. "Any baseball at all, anywhere" would also be another way to put it.

12. Favorite Drink? I imbibe coffee most regularly, but the drink I most enjoy would be a three-way tie betwixt a good wine (an Australian Shiraz for a red or a California label for a white), a good beer (Guiness or a Belgian porter or stout for dark beer; Young's Special London Ale for something lighter), and good coffee (darker roasts for the morning, and generally preferred on the bitter rather than the sour side).

13. Favorite Ice cream? I'm generall a bird-in-the-hand guy when it comes to ice cream. In other words, whichever one I currently get to eat is my favorite. Although I should note that Coldstone Creamery is very good. I would just observe that if you are going to take someone there, let them know ahead of time about the whole 'extra goodies in the ice cream' shtick. They may not know about it, and just order plain ice cream, which in a Coldstone Creamery is just silly. It'd be like ordering plain coffee at an expresso joint.

14. Disney or Warner Brothers? Warner Brothers. Especially that one song when Zacko or Flippo or Zany-o or whatever his name is sings all the countries in the world. I like that one.

15. Favorite fast food restaurant? In-n-Out. Best. Burgers. Ever. A franchise built on quality ingredients (relatively speaking, I mean, this is fast food, after all), and good service.

16. What color is your bedroom carpet? Blotchy. I'm slightly scared to hazard a guess as to which color predominates, or what the original was supposed to be.

17. How many times did you fail your driver's test? I didn't.

18. What do you do most often when you are bored? Read - books, blogs, baseball news. All that good stuff.

19. Bedtime? Usually around 12.

20. Favorite TV show? Does baseball season count? If not, then...um...meh. They're all pretty much from the same mold.

21. What are you listening to right now? Nothing, but the last thing I listened to was the 'Oldies' station, which blew my mind because, apparently, CCR and a lot of early classic rock (Rolling Stones, Doors, Fleetwood Mac, etc.) are apparently now considered 'Oldies.' Weirds me out, because growing up the 'Oldies' were up into the very early 60's, at most, meaning some early Beatles and Beach Boys was the heaviest rock you got. Now, the Stones are oldies? Where'd that come from?

22. What are your favorite colors? Green and Blue. On baseball uniforms, the classic white and gray of home and away jerseys.

23. Do you have any pets? Fuzzy Winston is a friendly little...I don't know what he is. A glittery fuzzball would be the best way I could describe him. Anyway, he's on my desk, and he's the closest thing I have to a pet at the moment.

24. Which came first the chicken or the egg? The important thing is that I like to eat them both. My, that sounds barbaric when I say it out loud.

25. What would you like to accomplish before you die? Do play-by-play for a live, professional baseball game.

26. Favorite instrument? Piano. Possibly cello.

27. Favorite band or musical artist? Sting. The music that he's created over the years, I don't really listen to it; but the fact that he's making it, I respect that.

28. Favorite school subject? History.

29. Favorite thing to eat? I am very much an equal opportunity consumer of food - I try to give all good food a chance.

30. Ever been hunting? No, just fishing. I have wandered about aimlessly in search of certain huntable animals, but never during the appropriate season or with a tag.

31. Favorite movie? Henry V; Treasure of the Sierra Madre; Princess Bride.

32. Who's your favorite classical composer? Bach and Mozart. (Tallis doesn't count as classical, does he?)

Time finished: 9:35 AM...the next day. What can I say? I got interrupted for a 23 hour period while I was doing this. It could happen to anybody.

A spot of humor

A Buddhist walks up to a hot dog vendor in New York and says, "Make me one with everything."

An experiment

So, the few times I've had Starbucks over the last year or so, I noted with a fair bit of dissatisfaction that their lattes were, at best, rather froofy. The milk was fine, yes, but that's all I could taste. And there's not much point in lattes if it seems like all you're drinking is some very energizing hot milk.

Now, I happen to have a nifty Starbucks gift card, which I usually use when I'm going somewhere, or on a Saturday when I find myself drooping whilst doing some extra grading or whatnot. Today, I decided to see if I could get some Starbucks coffee that actually tasted like real coffee (and not just the drip coffee, which is actually okay). I always get funny looks from them when I just order drip coffee anyway.

Well, it seems that in order to get real coffee at Starbucks, you just have to deal with funny looks.

Me: "Hi, I'd like a latte with double expresso."

Nice barista lady: "Um...okay....now, our grande's already come with two shots of expresso..."

Me:  "Yeah, but last time it was a little weak."

Barista: "So you want..." <voice sinks to near whisper> "...four shots of expresso?"

Me: "Yes! Yes, I want four shots."

The rest of the time, while I waited for my coffee, the barista gave me funny looks. Or, if she wasn't giving me a funny look, she was obviously trying very hard NOT to be giving me a funny look. On the plus side, it was actually a decent latte for once.
